The companies within the group cover pharmaceutical, meat processing, liquid egg and shell egg packaging industries. Main role is to develop software for machine control on PLC’s using the various IEC 61131-3 languages.
Support the service group and customers either in office or on-site as required. Industrial network design and support, primarily with EtherCAT network but other networks are used as required. Design and implement servo, HMI, pneumatic and safety solutions. Extensive knowledge of servo and VFD motor control systems.
Network Products Manager January 2007 – March 2008
MC2
Responsible for the technical support and market representation of the industrial network product ranges and RFID solutions manufactured by Turck Inc and Moxa. This includes supporting customers with training and troubleshooting of industrial networks such as DeviceNet™, Profibus and Ethernet. Trains customers on programming with the languages defined under the IEC 61131 standard using the development system CoDeSys. Hosts seminars on industrial networking and RFID networks. Represents Turck at industry seminars held in Michigan and Ohio.
Senior Software/Electrical Engineer September 1998 – January 2007
Diamond Systems
Worked in the research and development department of an OEM of egg packaging machinery. Designed new products using extensive understanding of various disciplines including pneumatics, electronics, electrical power distribution, servo motor systems and embedded software control.
Headed up the electrical and software team and was responsible for all projects that the electrical and software teams are involved in. Guided the teams on technology choices and solution avenues using the latest technologies where appropriate.
Part of a small team run by the senior management team, using the extensive industry experience gained, to plan the company’s ten-year strategies. Helped the manufacturing group to improve production methods and efficiency and also product quality.
This role was a multi discipline position including software design and development, electrical system design, electronics development, servo system design and pneumatics systems design. Is proficient in Solid Edge 3D modelling package as well as more conventional CAD packages. With an extensive understanding of Microsoft Office products including Excel and Project.
FRIDAYS (Cranbrook) Ltd February 1997 – September 1998
Assistant Engineering Manager
Reported directly to the Engineering Manager of one of the top six independent egg producers in the UK, leading a team of five engineers in maintaining optimum serviceability of Diamond and Staalkat “Selecta” egg production machinery at two separate sites.
Undertook analysis of existing production flows, recommending and introducing improved system changes. Redesigned control software and electro-mechanical services to deliver increased production output. Proven ability to introduce complex projects using practical experience gained in the UK and European egg production sector.
Planned and installed an internal training programme for engineering staff covering mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic skill-sets thereby ensuring maximum availability of resources. Undertakes risk-assessment of engineering procedures to identify weaknesses in the production process and recommend appropriate remedial action. Responsible for ensuring safe systems of work are applied on the production floor and that all appropriate Health and Safety legislation is met.
DIAMOND Systems 1995 - 1997
Service Manager UK & Eire
Installed egg production equipment, including breakers and egg washers, at clients’ premises using an extensive range of technical and computing skills. Overhauled and maintained machinery, reduced downtime to a minimum by the application of professional engineering standards and procedures. Installed complete new production lines (£750K+ per unit) within required timescales providing sole expertise on engineering issues.
Controlled and monitored the servicing arrangements for Diamond products prioritising workloads and matching engineering resources to minimise customer production losses and enhance the company’s customer service image.
Provided 1st line on-call responsibility for Diamond equipment in the UK and Eire and 2nd line on-call technical support for customers’ site engineers across Europe. Regularly flew to continental sites and assumed full engineering responsibility to return the equipment to service promptly and efficiently.
STONEGATE Farmers Ltd 1993 - 1995
Project Manager
Oversaw general engineering cover for 7 sites within the U.K. to ensure maximum equipment availability and liaised with external contractors on new installation schemes. Designed and constructed improved flow control and reject detection systems delivering significant decreases in production down-time and operating costs. Rebuilt and overhauled a Diamond Systems egg grader after fire damage, saving 90% of replacement cost. Managed it’s removal and re-installation to a new site 200 miles away.
Completed numerous development projects enhancing accuracy and validity of production information thereby improving management control of costs. Developed a computer program for monitoring and testing of portable electrical appliances to meet statutory legislation. 1st line on-call responsibility for all Stonegate egg production sites.
FRIDAYS (Cranbrook) Ltd 1990 - 1993
Engineering Supervisor
Supervised 3 site engineers maintaining all egg production/packaging machinery together with a company waste disposal plant. Ensured technical work was completed to BS5750 standards.
Assisted the Maintenance Engineer to install new technology ink jet printing equipment for egg graders. Used CAD software to design and construct a conveyor transfer system which improved production flows and reduced operating costs by 17%. Wrote and installed a suite of data acquisition programmes to monitor the general performance of all on-site production machinery which generated significant improvements to management control of costs. Trained all new engineering staff on site equipment ensuring safe systems of work were achieved.
